 Dick Nash
back

Born on jan. 26th 1928 as Richard.T Nash, Boston U.S.A.. started playing a brass instrument at the age of 10.

After his parents died while Dick was  still a young child he went to a boarding school and it was there were he came in contact with brass playing.
His first brass instrument he ever played on was a army-bugel, so he was told to play the trumpet. Even then he was  attracted to the trombone and in secret he practiced the trombone, he could play a high f but his tone and technique were terrible. At one time the bandmaster heard him play trombone and said " the trumpet is to small for you,  you must play the baritone" It was during his high school period that he switched to the trombone and took lessons from John Coffey of the Boston symphony orchestra
Even he took classical trombone lessons and played all the  repertoire his wish was to play dancemusic, which was very popular in the 40 th's and 50 th's. During this period there was a great market for big band, ballroom bands and so on. He traveled with Billy May and played in several  other bands.
In the 50th's the band time was over and a lot of great bands dissapeard, and Dick had problems finding a job as a trombone player so did a lot of other players at that time.
In 1953 Dick married Barbara and Dick  asked Barbara if she would like to go to LA for here honey moon ?? She said yes ! and they packed there bags and left for LA for there honey moon but also to build on a new future.
For nearly a year they struggled but the rescue  came by Tommy Pederson who arranged a job for him with one of the local bands. This was his lucky brake and his LA career began.
" moving to LA was the best thing I ever did, and made me living a good live"
His first soundtrack recording was " The dairy of Anne Frank" - 1959 by A.Newman.
Even at the age of 71 Dick Nash is considered to be one of the greatest in the field,
Because of his danceband background he is out  of the picture with some of the leading composers today he says.......
" the soundtracks are getting more symphonic these days and some composers think I don't fit in"
This is hard to imagine a man who played Jaws  (1975) but also ID4 !! how more symphonic can it get.

Jerry Goldsmith and Alan Silvestri are some of the composers who are loyal to there players and Dick still plays his parts at the highest level with these composers.

I was very furtuned to have met Dick Nash, he invited me for lunch and we have spoken about a lot of things even his wife Barbara took part in the discussion.
I will enjoy listening to my favorite soundtracks even more  knowing Dick is playing. -Marcel Schot 12 april 1999..
