John ( 1941-1987 ) started his career as a horn players but, by the time he had finished his degree at Cambridge, had switched to the tuba.
In the autum of 1964, he moved to London where he got the job with the BBC symphony orchestra. When he left the BBC for the London Symphony Orchestra he ensured that his contract acknowedged that he could accept chamber music
engagements. So from1966 till 1986, John had the possibility to play with the world famous Philip Jones Brass Ensamble. "Known to his closest colleagues simply as "Fletch", he became a legend in his own time.
With his premature death aged 46, we lost a musician of refinement and a performer of truly virtuously quite unknown in Britain which has since influenced the tuba fraternity worldwide. His travels, as a member of the London
Symphony Orchestra and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, led him to make friends all over the world. His playing was illumined by a desire to serve music first and foremost, and he always applied his formidable technique to his
